Denny Vrandečić (actually Zdenko, but most people have a really hard time to pronounce that) is working at affiliation::Wikimedia Deuschland. Previously he has been at the Institute AIFB at the KIT (Karlsruhe Institue of Technology). He is currently working on the project Wikidata. One of his major motivations is to make the world a better place for all people. He used to say that he wants to save the world, but he realized at some point that this would require the necessity for being saved, a situation which would not be much desired.

He worked and researched on topics of massive collaboration and the Semantic Web. He is convinced that Semantic Web technologies can help in making computers much easier to use, and to provide new services and possibilities based on top of the Semantic Web. It should improve communication and decision-making, create less misunderstandings, improve collaboration, so that more and more people can unfold their whole potential.

2020 was a challenging year, particularly due to the pandemic. Some things were very different, some things were dangerous, and the pandemic exposed the fault lines in many societies in a most tragic way around the world.

He got awarded a PhD summa cum laude, more correctly: a Doctor of political sciences (Dr.rer.pol.) at the Faculty of Economics, after succesfully finishing his studies in computer science and philosophy. He is pretty happy that this combination makes more sense in reality than it sounds.
+
Let's hope that 2021 will be better in that respect, that we will have learned from how the events unfolded.
He was a visiting researcher at the Laboratory of Applied Ontologies at the CNR, Rome, and the ISI Information Sciences Institute, USC University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

Denny also likes to write. Like for Germany's most succesful role playing game, Das Schwarze Auge (translated as The Dark Eye in English). He used to work on several Open Source projects around that game, DSA4 Werkzeug and Niobaras Foliant. He was founding administrator of the Croatian Wikipedia, Webmaster here at Simia, and working (very irregularly) on the webcomic nutkidz. He also collaborated on a translation of something*positive to German.

But I'm also amazed by how fast the vaccine was developed and made available to tens of millions.

His master thesis created the first validating XML parser and DOM implementation accessible from the Ada 95 programming language.

I think there's some chance that the summer of '21 will become one to sing about for a generation.

Denny comes from the beautiful island of Brač, in Dalmatia. Therefore he not only roots for the Croatian soccer team in international games, but also used to work intensively on the Croatian Wikipedia. He also worked on the English and German Wikipedia before. Today he is more working on the backend software, extending MediaWiki, the software Wikipedia runs on, with extensions that allow the wiki to understand the content of the wiki pages. Whatever that means.

Happy New Year 2021!

Oh, and he is terrible at answering emails.

Latest revision as of 09:46, 31 December 2020

2020 was a challenging year, particularly due to the pandemic. Some things were very different, some things were dangerous, and the pandemic exposed the fault lines in many societies in a most tragic way around the world.

Let's hope that 2021 will be better in that respect, that we will have learned from how the events unfolded.

But I'm also amazed by how fast the vaccine was developed and made available to tens of millions.

I think there's some chance that the summer of '21 will become one to sing about for a generation.

Happy New Year 2021!
